Winchester 1951 Model 70 Custom Rifle 257 Weatherby Magnum + Redfield

This beautiful model 70 was made in 1951 (SN 19978) and is a top-flight example of the high-end custom model 70’s of that era. There are no markings that indicate a factory special order and the barrel channel is stamped with some numbers and “D. BATES”. It features a 26” barrel tapering from 1.17” to 0.61” where there is a recessed crown. The Winchester proof mark is on the left side of the receiver at about 9:30, the bolt body, extractor and follower are beautifully jeweled. The nicely figured walnut Monte Carlo cheekpiece stock with fluted comb features very fine ribbon checkering, ebony forend tip and grip cap, Super Grade detachable sling swivels and Mershon ventilated recoil pad. In the superb Buehler mounts is a contemporary Redfield 1” Tube 3-9 scope with medium straight crosshairs. It is in excellent condition retaining 98% high luster blue with some slight fading on the bottom metal while the bore is bright, smooth and shiny with strong, sharp rifling and the stock is completely sound with some very thinly scattered light to moderate handling marks. The scope has crystal clear optics, retains 100% finish and all controls works smoothly. A truly beautiful example of a 50’s era custom version of The Rifleman’s Rifle.
