Under Hammer Target Rifle Not Billinghurst Hilliard Remington Or Kendall

This impressive under hammer target rifle is something of a mystery in that I canít find an example of it in any of my research. It isnít a Billinghurst, Hilliard, Remington or Kendall and I can find no example of its unusual hammer profile or the screw with a tapered square head at the rear of the sight base. It is quite substantial and may be threaded into barrel. The massive 31Ē barrel is an octagon to round configuration with an unusual geometric transition, starting at a little over 1-1/2Ē across the flats at the breech and tapering down to 1.365Ē at the muzzle which has four holes in its face for a false muzzle (not included). The stock is impressively figured and may be cherry with a German silver serpentine on either side of the wrist and the fancy trigger guard, patch box and butt plate seem to be German silver as well. The lock is a double set trigger type and it works perfectly. The rear sight is a later modification utilizing the base of a 32 S&W case for the aperture and the front sight seems to be altered from the original as well. Mounted atop the barrel is a reproduction long brass scope from Navy Arms featuring fine cross hairs and screw on lens caps. Obviously, the stock is broken and it seems that itís not the first time Ė itís a clean break with only one small surface chip missing Ė it will mend nicely. The eight groove bore comes in at about 38 caliber and is Antique Excellent with only some very thinly scattered very light pitting (we used a Hawkeye bore scope) while the outside is a fairly even brown patina with some scattered rust spotting. The scopeís optics are clear and bright. Itís a very substantial rifle weighing in at 18 pounds, 2 ounces and its cost at the time of purchase was obviously not light weight either! An interesting arm ready for the attention it deserves from a pair of appreciative and knowledgeable hands. Please let me know if you can identify the maker.
