Patent Breech Loader 44 Rimfire Revolver US / CSN

This pistol is quite puzzling as we haven’t been able to identify it in spite of searching high and low. It is similar to a Tranter in some ways but doesn’t seem to be one. It’s marked “PATENT BREECH LOADER NO 6105” on the top strap which is shaped in the same style as some Tranters’ and the cylinder is deeply notched like some Tranters. There are small proof marks over each of the five charge holes in the cylinder that might be Birmingham but we’re not sure of that. On the left side of the barrel is stamped “CSN” that could stand for Confederate States Navy or Connecticut State Nitwits and there are two small proof marks there as well while on the right side is a small “SH” or “HS” or “US” depending on how you look at it. It has a 44 caliber, 5-5/8” barrel with brass pin front sight and a notch rear sight at the rear of the top strap. There’s scroll engraving, checkered walnut grip and steel grip cap. It is nicely blended brown and gray patina while the bore is 20% lightly pitted with good, strong rifling and the grip is completely sound with only a few light handling marks. The hand is present but the hand spring is either broken or absent and double action won’t cock the hammer though it can be thumbed back and holds strongly. An interesting pistol to say the least especially if you find out it served with the CT State Nitwits. An advanced research project that may yield a stunning revelation in the end.
