Allen & Wheelock 32 Pepperbox Bar Hammer Bag Handle

This is a very nice example of Ethan Allen’s genius touch that he brought to all of his numerous partnerships and associations. It features a 6 bore barrel of 3-3/8” length from the front of the nipple shield which, like the frame, is lightly engraved. “ALLEN & WHEELOCK” is stamped in one barrel flute, “PATENTED APRIL 16” in an adjacent flute and “ALLEN’S PATENT / 1845” on the left side of the hammer. Finish is a fairly uniform blend of gray and brown patina with some scattered oxidation spotting while the 32 caliber bores are a little rusty but not pitted and the grips are completely sound with only a handful of ancient, light handling marks. The action works perfectly and the nipples are in very good shape. Being the first double action in America helped and packing six bores these arms quickly came to be the source of rapid sustained firepower and capturing a huge portion of the market from the 1830’s to the 1860’s. Hold a piece of history in your hand and wonder who carried it, where, who shot it and at what….
