Smith & Wesson Victory Model 38 Spl. WWII Revolver

This is one of the iconic WWII Victory Model S&Ws used by our pilots (and others) during the war. The government had 38 Special tracer ammunition loaded so pilots could use them to signal if they were downed and a neat shoulder holster with cartridge loops was available. One was fired at a Japanese cruiser by a pilot who was otherwise out of ammo during one of the most important navel engagements of the war in the Pacific (The Battel Off Samar - Taffy 3) talk about hutzpah! This example retains about 70% original phosphate finish with some holster wear and generalized loss, scattered oxidation spotting, a little pin-prick pitting and a little battering typical of in-theater use while 98% case color on the hammer and trigger remains; the bore is perfect and the grips are sound with only a couple of light handling marks. The backside of each grip has been slightly dished in the middle and both are slightly undersized which may indicate sanding at some point in the distant past. Serial numbers on frame, barrel, cylinder and extractor all match as do the assembly numbers on the frame and crane. Lock-up is quite tight for a Smith and all indications are that it has been shot very, very little. Imagine pulling this from your shoulder holster, inverting your plane and firing at that cruiser from your cockpit as you flew over it yeah baby!
