Springfield 1873 Trapdoor Rifle 1879 Made 1883

The Springfield “model 1879” was not an official name of this rifle but collectors have used it to distinguish the Trapdoors made between 1879 and 1885 that differed from their predecessors by having a low-arch breech block, wide frame, serial number between 1000000 and 280000 (appx), two piece trigger guard and thicker butt plate. This one is SN 237815 and bears the correct SWP inspector’s cartouche with an 1883 date (which corresponds with the serial number date). The breech block is marked 1873 which is correct for this arm. It is mostly an even, dark brown patina with scattered tiny oxidation spotting while the bore is perfectly bright, smooth and shiny with strong, sharp rifling and the stock is completely sound with about the average number of scratches, dings and bruises found on these arms. The leather sling is a quality replacement and the ram rod is absent. A very nice trapdoor in original configuration and with an outstanding bore – how can you miss?
