Springfield Armory 1903 Rifle 30-06 1910 – 1916

This Springfield Armory 1903 rifle is serial number 442750 which dates to 1910 while the barrel date is dated 1-16 under the flaming bomb with proof punch. This is a “low number” rifle made before proper heat treating control assured non-brittle receivers. The bolt is period correct with small gas hole, straight handle and flaming bomb and punch mark on bottom of the handle root. The bottom of the barrel is marked with a P and the bayonet lug with an H. The stock is a Remington 1903/1903A3 replacement scant stock with no markings. The metal is a fairly uniform gray/green phosphate that has faded somewhat while the bottom metal is mostly light gray having been cleaned at some point and the butt plate is the same. The bore has even, moderate pitting with good enough rifling to impart a spin while the stocks are completely sound with only a couple of light handling marks. A nice example of an early Springfield that has probably fought his way through at least two wars.
