Winchester 1894 Rifle 38-55 Made First Year 94

This Winchester 1894 rifle was made in the first year of production (SN 13841) and is in pretty much original configuration according to West in his definitive WINCHESTER FOR OVER A CENTURY as an Early Variety, 2nd Variation featuring the correct markings on the barrel (see photo), split top checkered panel on the hammer, 22A black powder sporting rear sight, correct tang marking (see photo). The barrel is 25-3/4” long and has no crown indicating having been shortened (probably ¼” due to muzzle damage of some kind). It hasn’t been lettered but it may be a special order in that it has a ¾ magazine. The front sight is a modified period replacement. Finish is nicely blended brown and gray patina with scattered dings and small rust spots from antiquity while the bore is rough with strong just enough rifling to impart a spin with the right bullet and load. The stocks are sound with a small chip at the right rear of the forend, another at the stock line on the right near the front and a short, stable crack at the front top right of the butt where it meets the frame. The stocks show all the character of a rifle that has been used to hunt and perhaps to fight for a century and a quarter. A first year of production 1894 that is in pretty good shape in spite of having been used as an effective tool for a 125 years.
