Allen & Wheelock Side Hammer 32 RF Revolver

Made from 1859 thru 1862 in Worchester, Massachusetts it’s estimated that just over 1000 of these revolvers were made and many went off to the Civil War stuck in soldiers belts as evidenced by the many period photos and images showing just that. This one has a 4" octagon barrel with brass blade front sight. The left barrel flat is stamped "ALLEN & WHEELOCK WORCHESTER, MASS. U.S./ALLEN"S PATENYS SEPT. 7, NOV. 9, 1858" and the “JULY 3, 1860” stamp on the left side of the frame visible except for the last two digits. It is mostly blended brown and gray patina with some oxidation spotting, and impact marks on the bottom flats of the barrel, mostly on the lower left flat. The action works perfectly and lock-up is fine while the bore is about 25% pitted and the original walnut grips are completely sound with about 35% original finish remaining. The serial number of 373 is stamped on the end of the cylinder and also on the inside of each grip panel and the left side of the frame. A nice old fella that very likely went off to war for use as a desperate back-up if things went badly.
