Lee Enfield Mk I 303 British Rifle W/ Southerland Sight 1500 London Small Arms Co 1896 Canadian Marked Long Lee

This is an early Lee Enfield Mk I made by London Small Arms Co in 1896 as evidenced by the butt socket markings. On the butt are M&D markings (Militia & Defense) indicating Canadian ownership. It seems to be in original condition right down to the magazine lanyard, 30.2 barrel, leather sling, dust cover and volley sights but at some point the rear sight was changed to the Southerland Rifle Sight Company target sight. These sights were acquired by the army specifically for military target competition and they offer very fine screw adjustment to both windage and elevation. The patina on the sight exactly matches that of the rifle making us pretty sure that the sight was installed shortly after the rifle was made. There are unit markings on the butt plate tang and side of the butt and a brass cleaning rod section is under the barrel. The receiver and bolt serial numbers match. Finish is a mix of blue and dark patina with some scattered tiny rust spotting while the bore has an even frosting of light pitting with good, strong rifling and the stock is completely sound with the usual evidence of the insults one acquires during a long and faithful service to Queen and Country. Completely free of both import and export marks its an exceptional find for the Commonwealth collector.
