1908 Steyr Mannlicher Schoenauer Carbine 8x56 MS Von Lengerke & Detmold Inc. New York VL&D

This is one of the classic Mannlicher Schoenauer Model 1908 carbines made by Steyr until just before WWII and, in this case, imported by Von Lengerke & Detmold Inc. of New York. Chambered for the 8X56MS cartridge it features a 19.7” barrel with ramped front bead and adjustable folding rear sights, 5 shot rotary magazine (a thing of beauty), butter knife bolt handle, double set triggers, full length finely checkered walnut stock with steel nose cap, grip cap, sling swivels and grooved steel butt plate with trap under which is a cleaning rod and the original front sight. The folding rear sight is a Lyman type. The serial number 10000 is on the barrel and bolt while the stock bears 29208 stamped in front of the rear swivel (a VL&D stock number?). It retains about 90% original blue with almost all the loss on the bottom metal while the bore is perfectly smooth, bright and shiny with strong, sharp rifling and the stock is completely sound with only a handful of handling marks. The bolt face is smooth and flat with no primer ring. A very nice 1908 Carbine which couldn’t have come into the country through a more prestigious house. (For $50 Griffin & How will look it up in the VL&D record books they have and report the details. Who knows? This might have gone to some famous personage!)
