Winchester 71Deluxe Rifle 348 WCF Made 1937 Win

When Winchester introduced the model 71 they called it the Golden Jubilee Action and heralded it as “a supreme achievement in lever action universal hunting rifles.” With robust strength, durability and accuracy it could deliver its 348 pill with lethal results on the biggest of North American game “from Alaska moose and Kodiak bears to Florida deer and panthers” so the copy read. This example was made in 1937 (SN 12739) and according to West in his definitive WINCHESTER OF OVER A CENTURY it is in mostly original condition featuring a 24” barrel with integral ramp front sight and 2/3 magazine (4 shots), long tang, receiver drilled and tapped for receiver sight, curved top and bottom checkered panel on hammer, checkered walnut stocks with fluted comb, grip cap, Pachmayr ventilated recoil pad (LOP is 13”), Winchester QD sling swivels and semi-beavertail forend (see photos for markings). A blank has been installed in the rear sight dovetail and a Williams adjustable aperture rear sight and leather sling have been added. It retains a strong 98% of a high polish professional reblue with some slight action thinning on the lever root, loading gate and hammer while the bore is perfect; bright, smooth and shiny with strong, sharp rifling and the stocks are completely sound with scattered light handling marks and scratches some of which are underneath the old, well done refinish (about 80% remains). Both stock and metal refinish was executed with a minimum of sanding and buffing leaving the wood still mostly proud to the metal and lettering is not blurred – a nice job making for a handsome rifle chambered for the potent 348 WCF.
