Winchester Model 88 Lever Rifle 308 Win 1st Year

In the world of lever action rifles, the model 88 is the pinnacle of evolution and has an almost cult-like following. For good reason; very nicely balanced - it handles and carries superbly, it’s totally reliable, extremely durable, has a very smooth short stroke action, is very accurate, has elegant lines and packs a 308 Winchester punch. This example was made in 1955 (SN 9644) which was the year it was introduced and was the the first new Winchester designed lever action in 60 years. It features a 22” barrel with ramped and hooded front bead sight, adjustable folding rear sight, steel receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounts and receiver sights, cross bolt safety, detachable magazine, walnut stock with steel grip cap, classic Winchester hand checkering and sling swivels. Since the trigger goes with the lever during cycling the shooter need not reacquire it after cycling – faster, more accurate follow-up shots. Added to the receiver are a 66W88 Lyman aperture sight and Weaver scope base (both easily removable if desired). Not much more you could ask for in a lever action rifle. It retains about 99% original blue while the bore is perfectly smooth and shiny with strong, sharp rifling and the stock is completely sound with no cracks or chips retaining about 90% original finish with only a few light handling marks. A first year of production Model 88 made to a level of quality that can’t be matched by today’s manufacturers and in topflight condition to boot.
