Winchester Model 70 270 Win WCF Standard Rifle Made 1948 Clover Leaf Tang Excellent Bore

The cartridge and rifle combination that Jack OíConner made famous - the 270 Winchester chambered Model 70 is one of the most favored hunting rifles in American history. This example was made in 1948 (SN 81881) which was well before academia sent forth its toxic MBAís to poison American industry (starting with quality). It, in current terms is something of a kludge in that the barreled action is correct in itself (matching numbered bolt, undercut bolt release, solid bolt knob, 2 position wing safety, correct barrel markings, integral front sight base) while the stock is from a later rifle that had a type III receiver (non-cloverleaf) and features 1Ē swivels, channel for a heavy contour barrel (probably a medium heavy or target weight) and a Winchester solid recoil pad that was phased out in late 1959. The bottom metal seems correct for the barreled action. It retains about 80% original metal finish with most of the loss on the bottom metal and bolt knob while the bore is smooth and shiny with strong, sharp rifling (we used a Hawkeye bore scope) and the stock is sound with an almost invisible hairline crack at the upper tang and thinly scattered light to moderate handling marks and scratches and about 90% original finish remaining. The rear barrel sight dovetail is filled with a Marbleís blank. The cloverleaf tang has been inleted in the type III tang area and when we removed all three action screws and the barrel screw we were not able to get the action out of the stock (the bottom metal did come fee) and believe the action has been glued in (we didnít want to force it much as itís a consigned rifle). A two part frankenseventy that in spite of some phase blending is still a great pre-64 model 70 in every way - I'm sure Jack O'Conner would have dumped an elk with it in a heartbeat.
