Remington 788 Rifle 308 Winchester – A Tack Driver

The Remington 788 is a brilliant design that was introduced to be an economy rifle for those that couldn’t afford Remington’s flagship rifle; the model 700. It turned out to be so superior to the 700 that even those that could afford the 700 bought the 788 instead. Well, the accountants at Remington couldn’t have that and forced it out of production in 1983. It features a rear-lugged bolt with nine lugs in three rows of three lugs each facilitating a bolt handle lift of only 60 degrees as opposed to the 90 degree lift required by two lug designs (like the 700) - which makes for faster cycling and greater scope clearance. The lugs lock into the receiver behind the magazine well & ejection port which reduces bolt travel (further speeding up cycle time) and allows for a thicker, more rigid receiver free of weakening lug raceways (like the 700 has). Further, a single column magazine translates to a narrower feed port and that, along with a narrow ejection port combine to add even more strength and rigidity to the receiver making it far more accurate than other designs. All that design theory is borne out by performance giving the 788 an unparalleled reputation as a tack-driver. In fact, many have been converted to competition rifles and are highly sought after by gunsmiths that specialize in that area. This example was made in 1978 (barrel code RQ, SN B6024586) and is chambered for the superb 308 WIN (which is also inherently accurate). It features a 24” barrel, fully adjustable sights, receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounts, 3 shot detachable magazine, thumb safety and satin finished Monte Carlo stock. It retains a strong 98% original blue with only a few tiny rust spots and some slight thinning on the bottom metal while the bore is smooth and shiny with strong, sharp rifling and no throat erosion at all (we used a Hawkeye bore scope and the circumferential tool marks at the throat are still quite evident – an indication that very few rounds have been fired, and the bolt face also indicates that very few rounds have been fired). The stock is completely sound with only a few scattered light handling marks and an area of light abrasions on the right butt. A really great rifle in condition that’s almost never found today with these rifles.
