J.P. Sauer Pre-War 8X57 Mauser Sporting Rifle Suhl Made German Stalking Rifle 1912

We believe this elegant bolt rifle was made about 1912 based on the crown over N (introduced about 1911) and the powder charge and bullet markings (the powder charge marking was discontinued after 1912). The 2,67 grams of Gewehr Blättchen Pulver (military flake powder) and Stahl-mantel Geschoss (steel jacketed bullet) markings along with the 172.28 on the bottom barrel flat indicate it is an 8X57mm – to check we ran a 8X57 Mauser round through the action with no problems but a competent gunsmith should be employed to confirm the chambering. During this period Sauer used receivers obtained from Mauser in Oberndorf. It features a 23-1/2” barrel of the classic octagon to round transition and integral rib configuration and is marked “GUSS-STAHL-KRUPP-ESSEN where it meets the receiver. It has a two leaf rear sight with markings for 80 & 175 meters, silver bead front sight, claw scope mounts, lever release floor plate and double set triggers. The classic walnut stock with Schnabel forend, cheek piece with shadow line, checkered grip with steel cap and horn butt plate is of the style that continued on into the 20’s. All serial numbers match including the barrel, bottom metal, action screws and wedge, however that of the bolt does not (though all bolt parts match each other). It retains about 50% original metal finish with scattered oxidation spotting, light cleaning, and fading to gray/brown patina particularly on the bottom metal. The bore is smooth and shiny with good, strong rifling and the stock is sound with scattered light to moderate handling marks including some small chips along the Schnabel edge and the toe is cracked along the line of the lower butt plate screw – it looks like a glue repair was made at one time and the toe of the butt plate is absent and what remains has scattered insect damage. There are a couple of small cracks in thin sections around the receiver that can be easily repaired if desired though they are stable and might be left as they are. We would like to see this fine rifle repatriated if possible and in any case; would like it to get the little TLC it needs to be restored to its prior stateliness.
